Save Water! Lets push the day 0!

Image
The water crisis in the world is increasing and as you read this, the number shown in the picture is increasing, people living in areas with water crises are increasing every second. Our water usage has increased at twice the rate at which our population is increasing. Apart from the increase in usage, climate change is increasing water to evaporate from the surface of Earth leading to an increase in draughts. Many people in the world, have to walk miles just to get water to drink and for household usage. Many cities are on the verge of getting their day 0, that is the entire city will run out of the water, and the population from that city might have to migrate elsewhere. Every one of us knows that water is important for mere sustenance of human life but what are we doing so that we preserve this water for generations to come. I have come up with a few easy steps which we can practice and contribute our part in pushing the day 0 to infinity. These are very simple steps but they...

Solution for plastic waste, let's be the change!

Image
As you are reading this, you already know that the world is facing a lot of problems because of its excessive dependence on plastic. Plastics are not biodegradable. Plastic can be recycled but single-use plastic which is used to make plastic bags are not profitable and hence many recyclers don't prefer to recycle that. And over that, some plastics cant be recycled like sheet molding compound(SMC). So, plastic is a major problem today, but in this blog, I am going to show some easy ways that you can implement as a consumer just to avoid the use of plastic. Companies like HUL, ITC are trying to find solutions for plastic packing, or at least they are saying that they are trying because all of their products have plastic packing be it their packed foods or their shampoo. How can we as consumers support these companies by changing our consumption patterns because after all, we have to save this Earth and other living forms like fishes who are dying in the sea because of excessive p...

Partnerships leading Transformation

Image
So basically when I started exploring Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), I was very curious about SDG 17 which is partnerships to achieve this goal. So basically rest 16 SDGs covers almost every issue the world is facing currently and what all needs to be done for sustainable development currently and for the next few years. But to achieve this we require SDG 17 which is about creating global partnerships for achieving these goals. Today I was attending the virtual session(because of COVID) of H.E. Dr. Ahmed Albanna, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to India, and I realized the importance of this goal. In this session, he stated that we are taking utmost care of the migrants who are from different countries because these are the people who have helped UAE economically and socially. And this is the thinking every country should adopt about migrants. He told specifically that people from various countries have helped build UAE by supporting in various activities ...

Reducing our carbon footprints! No Planet B

Image
Big things start with something small. And this is how Scandavaian countries have started reducing their carbon footprint, especially Sweden. People there have started doing small things which have led to major changes in their environment and reducing the overall carbon footprint and they enjoy a good quality of air. Today lets see these small steps and let's try to incorporate them in our life. The first step is to change the way we commute. 30% of cities pollution comes from the transport system in the city. So, next time you have a chance, take that city bus rather than going to the office in your own car. Carpooling is another effective way where you can enjoy your ride with your friends and save a hole in your pocket. If its short distance, walk, or cycle instead of using your two-wheeler. Also, try to combine things that you have to take care of on a particular day on the way rather than going out again and again.  The second thing is switching to clean energy. ...

Solution to E-waste?? Recycle

Image
E-waste is a major problem the entire world is facing currently. I am sure you must have thought what to do with your old phone and then just put it in your side drawer or threw away somewhere in a huge pile of waste. So, in this blog, I will give you one sure shot solution for your e-waste be it your old phone or computer, printer even a watch or calculator.  But let me give you a brief on why e-waste is such a big problem and so you will be encouraged to follow the solution. So seen in the picture this is just one pile of e-waste generated from a small Tier-2 city and that city has similar 15-20 piles and this amount is just the waste collected in one year. Too much right??  It is estimated that 50 million tonnes of e-waste was generated globally in 2018. Half of this is personal devices such as computers, screens, smartphones, tablets, and TVs, with the remainder being larger household appliances and heating and cooling equipment. Despite 66 percent of the world’s pop...

Mica for our cosmetics causing child labor, let's shift to alternatives!

Image
So basically all makeup products from almost all brands have mica in them. And these mica comes from the mines of Jharkhand where kids work so they can eat. In this blog I want to urge all the people using such makeup/cosmetics please STOP using them. If the consumers stop using such products then only these brands who exploit children for their raw material will understand and start taking measures for sustainable procurement. The mica is used in various cosmetic products and it's used for shimmer and shine. Its also used in skincare products that are used to provide radiance or glow. Major cosmetic companies like Loreal, MAC who claim that for their sustainable value chain use mica for their cosmetic and skincare products. This mica comes from mines of Jharkhand, India where small kids work to collect mica by risking their lives for the same. They start working from the age of 4 because if they don't work they don't have food to eat. The entire family works in mines...

Women Empowerment

Image
So, this is a long one but as I am I feminist I poured all my heart into this. The topic which I took today is how can one bring a change for women because sustainability is not only about the environment but also social stability. If a women is educated then she works hard to bring the society forward. The sustainable development goal, SDG 5 introduced by the UN addresses gender inequality. The aim of this goal is to eliminate discrimination against women in both public and private spheres. It also aims to provide equal rights to women in terms of economic resources and undertake reforms for the same. Why did I choose to discuss about this goal is because achieving this goal is very crucial for the world not only socially but also economically. Also, I am personally attached to this because of few incidences that I experienced and a few that I saw. Hence, I feel it is utmost necessary to bring changes in these domains. Before two y ears, when I had to make a de...

Easiest solution for making Earth Green: Green Roofs

Image
What's best to start a blog on sustainability?? Making world green. So, this concept of having gardens on the terrace is going on for long. But recently I came across the concept of green roofs. And this one amazing thing which is being practiced in many cities across the world will bring phenomenal changes in the environment. So basically, green roof is a very simple concept and anyone can start doing this and contribute to making the Earth green. So, let me start by explaining what is a green roof and later I will try to give ideas on how you can make your roof green no matter where you live. So as the name suggests green roof is any roof which is green, that is plants are present on the roof. But it's not that simple otherwise people may call it a terrace garden. So, there are layers of waterproof membrane, drainage and irrigation system, root barrier, and vegetation above all of this. They require careful structural analysis, so big corporations please go ahead and hi...
