The tragedy of commons!

Why is it that we take those things for granted that we get in abundance? This is true for almost everything, someone's love or the resources mother nature has given us like trees around and the pure air we breathe. I am writing this blog today on the theory of commons, which says that "there are some goods which we have and those are available to everyone, hence people become selfish while they use those goods and in the end, everybody runs out of those goods. Now why all of a sudden today I have become philosophical is because I saw my neighbor cutting a tree. The tree was on a public street and hence comes under common good but leaves of that tree were falling in his compound and hence he wanted to get rid of that tree. I tried to stop him, also calling other people for help but the lame reason he gave me was because of these leaves his compound was getting dirty and inviting germs. Also, if he didn't cut that tree some other day the government is going to develop the street and the tree is going to come down, that was the explanation of other neighbors. I couldn't see the tree coming down, so I came back and started writing this, just that I couldn't save that one tree, but maybe if somebody will read this and understand the importance of trees around us, it will stop them from cutting another tree down. Also, if you feel the pain after seeing trees cut around you just for development please stand up and at least try to stop them and then plant a tree for the one lost. I did the same, I planted a tree in my compound.

So, coming back to the tragedy of commons. The nature around us is depleting day by day, and we humans are letting it deplete just because of our selfish motives, not thinking of our own future.  Amazon rainforest which is the lungs of Earth is a victim of deforestation and the forest cover is decreasing every year. People are depleting forests for mining, farming, house constructions and many other selfish human needs. Forest fires are increasing because of carelessness of humans. Scientists have reported that since the last 95 years, Earth's total forest cover has reduced by 45%. This number is alarming. And due to our selfishness, we are increasing this number and the activities of deforestation have increased recently. But desperate times call for desperate measures and we can still save our planet for our future by just planting more trees.

There are ways to grow an entire forest i.e. your own oxygen tank in your backyard. This method is highly effective as you are not only planting trees but also you can eat your own organic food. Today, I am not going to suggest a list of measures, but just planting trees where ever you can and whenever you can. Let's make this world green again! Even a tree a year can make a difference, so you can start this birthday. If we start planting trees now still there is a chance that Earth can survive, so better start before its too late.
